The Nick and Mary Engagement Story

On January 16th Nick proposed to me in Klosters, Switzerland. Of course I said yes before he even asked and since then I have retold the story many times with a huge smile on my face. I love our engagement story!!

On Saturday, January 10th I left for a work trip to the UK and Switzerland. On Sunday evening Nick was here in Columbus, Ohio hanging out with his sister Cara and discussing the best way to propose. Cara encouraged his initial idea of flying to Switzerland to surprise me and on Monday, a mutual friend, Brandon, also encouraged the idea. By Tuesday night the 13th Nick had a setting for the ring, my father’s blessing, a plane ticket and a hotel. And I had absolutely no idea. Nick claims that keep the whole thing a secret from me was one of the hardest things he’s had to do!

On Thursday evening as I talked to Nick on the phone I didn’t realize that he was in the Toronto airport waiting for the flight to Zurich. He did a great job at hitting the mute button on his phone when the airline announcements came on!

On Friday I went to work and around 4 pm me and two co-workers left work in Greifensee, Switzerland and headed by train to Klosters, Switzerland for the night so we could go skiing on Saturday morning in the Swiss Alps. In case any of your are into geography, Klosters is a city right next to Davos, where the World Economic Forum is currently taking place.

Nick had already arrived in Klosters earlier in the day. He’s also been to Switzerland before for work, so he knew the train system and his way around. My train arrived in Klosters around 6:30 pm and as I walked down the main street, still decorated for Christmas, I remember thinking “Oh wow, it’s so pretty, I really wish Nick was here to see this.” I even tried to take photos so I could show him.

After a short walk I arrived at my hotel, the Hotel Walserhof where British royalty stays when they visit Klosters to ski!

Nick had asked that when I arrived at my hotel on Friday night that I take 30 minutes to talk to him on the phone. We had trouble finding time to talk all week since I was 6 hours ahead and usually sleeping by the time he was done with work. He figured that when I got to my hotel it would be evening for me and around his lunchtime. I briefly called him but said I couldn’t talk since the two co-workers were waiting on me to go to dinner. Our phone call dropped and when I got ahold of Nick again he was outside (I assumed going to lunch) and he asked where I was. By this time I was in the hotel lobby having a before-dinner drink. Nick cut the phone call short and said “Have fun”. I thought it was really odd and couldn’t tell if he was upset with me or preoccupied. In reality he was RUNNING uphill to my hotel from his hotel as he was afraid I would leave for dinner and he would miss me!

About 2 minutes after hanging up the phone with Nick, I looked up and he was standing in front of me in the lobby! I was stunned, shocked, and really confused! And according to eye-witness accounts my face was priceless. Nick sat with me on the couch and I introduced him to the one co-worker he didn’t know. For a few minutes we sat there and I proceeded to ask some really crazy questions. “How did you get here?” “Why aren’t you are work?” “Why are you here?” “Is everything okay?” Nick was really calm and answered them all very smoothly. He told my mom earlier in the week that he had about a 5 minute window from when he saw me to when I would figure out why he was there — and he was right. I still hadn’t figured it out when he asked to see my room at the hotel. My thought was that he wanted to give me a hello kiss and hug not in front of co-workers. As soon as I shut the door to my hotel room I realized why he might be there…. and he was already down on his knee proposing!! It was the sweetest, most romantic proposal and one that I will never, ever forget. Here’s a photo of us shortly after getting engaged:

Then the next morning, on Saturday, I went skiing in the Swiss Alps while Nick caught up on some sleep. I know, my life is terrible ;-)

On Sunday, we both flew back to Ohio, although on separate flights and he got stuck in Toronto overnight. The current plan to is have a wedding at the end of this summer so now we are deep into the details of planning! Eventually I’ll have to turn this story into a Heritage Makers storybook :)

Heritage Makers Christmas Books

Christmas is over and my tree has one lone present left under it. Luckily I am still eating leftover buckeyes (thanks Sis!).  Here are the heritage maker gifts I gave this year for Christmas.

First, the Christmas Card I sent to my close friends and family.  I received many compliments on how nice the card turned out! This is a screenshot of the inside, to view the entire card, click the image (or use this link: Christmas Card 2008).

This year I made both my niece, Hannah, and nephew, Adam, their own storybooks. Since Hannah is almost 3, I made her storybook all about her with simple sentences so she can start to identify words. I’ve heard that she has requested the book be read every night to her since receiving it – so I’ll take that to mean that she loves it. Here is a screenshot of two of the inner pages, to view the entire storybook click the image (or use this link: Hannah Storybook 2008).

For Adam’s storybook, I was running out of time, so I used a template from the Heritage Makers Template Gallery (this baby boy brag book template), and dropped in photos of Adam from the past 9 months. It was quicker to do, but turned out just as cute. Below is a screenshot of two of the inner pages, to view the entire storybook click the image (or use this link: Adam Storybook 2008).

Hope your Christmas was full of wonderful family memories and have a happy and safe new year!!

My cousin, Lee

My cousin, Lee Page, moved to California last year. Lee is more like my third little brother than a cousin – we’ve always been close and even used to live down the street from each other growing up. Little Lee isn’t so little anymore, since he moved to California and is surviving just fine on his own. But I miss him!! Recently he traveled to Argentina to participate in a new reality show for the Sci-Fi channel called Estate of Panic. Talk about a sense of adventure! The episode he’s in is the pilot episode and it airs this Wednesday, November 12 at 10 pm on the Sci-Fi channel. I can’t wait to see it!

Now this is family heritage

My parents had a family get-together tonight for some extended family who are in town from Florida to attend the OSU v. Purdue game tomorrow. It’s all about football & tailgating in my family!

My Uncle Mike, Aunt Marcy, their oldest son Matt, and his wife Lindsay arrived earlier today (Friday) and are staying through Sunday.

My Uncle Mike and Aunt Marcy both met at OSU and are very active (Mike is VP) in the OSU Alumni chapter in Sarasota, Florida where they live.

Matt and Lindsay are both Civil Engineers who met in college at Illinois, but they enjoy visiting and attending Buckeye games. I really think they visit Ohio for the bonfires my dad makes on cool, fall nights. According to them, there are only hot fall nights in Florida.

While we were all together tonight we celebrated two birthdays: my Grandma Rosie and my brother, Doug. I made S’mores cookie bars for dessert so that became the birthday “cake”.

After dinner and cake, Matt brought out the family tree and history he’s been gathering. He showed the family tree from my mom’s side (his dad’s side) – the Kennelly’s. He’s traced my Grandma Rosie Kennelly Martin back through the Bell’s and Murphy’s to ancestors that arrived from Ireland and even back to an ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War and was friends with George Washington (of course since I didn’t write the name down I can’t remember it – I need to get a copy of the family tree!). He also traced my Grandpa James Kennelly back through his ancestors that immigrated from Germany.

Matt showing the rest of us the Kennelly family tree he has created.

The stuff he’s discovered is fascinating – he’s become a heritage detective!! He’s typed in different spellings of last names to try and find the information, and he’s searched military records, Ellis Island records, Ancestor.com, you name it, he’s looked for it. Now I need to get the knowledge he has collected and start to put it into a Heritage Makers book so that our heritage is recorded to share with everyone in the Kennelly family.

So all of the work Matt is doing is on my Mom’s side of the family. Before tonight I knew significantly more about my Dad’s side of the family as there are tons of records since part of his family tree comes from Mormon roots and they keep amazing records. I recently had another Heritage Maker’s Consultant contact me through this blog mainly with blog questions, BUT in the process of helping her we realized that we are related through my great-great grandfather Joseph Tanner. The world truly is becoming more connected.

Also on my dad’s side, my great-great-great grandfather is Erastus Snow, one of the first Mormon Pioneers, along with Brigham Young, to enter the Salt Lake Valley. Years ago, when my family was visiting Salt Lake City, we visited the “This is the Place” monument which has a statue of Erastus Snow. I have to dig up the photo that shows my brothers, myself and Erastus Snow  – not too many people can claim to have a photo with their great-great-great grandfather!!

What unique stories are in your family’s history? I know I need to start writing this stuff down so it’s not lost, so first I’ll starting with this blog and next a Heritage Makers book!
